Design and Display
The build and design of the Nokia 5.1 follows in the trend of 2018 Nokia smartphones like the Nokia 6.1, Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco. It boasts of a unibody made of aluminum (6000 series), with the front sporting a 2.5D glass overlay. The back houses the fingerprint sensor which should be easily reachable while the sides are slightly rounded to cushion handling. The device is served in three colour options; Copper, Tempered Blue, Black
The Nokia 5.1, at 151.1 mm is quite tall which means you may require two hands sometimes to reach every part of the display. And speaking of the display, the Nokia 5.1 packs a 5.5-inch full-HD+ screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels and a pixel density of 439 ppi. The display on the Nokia 5.1 is protected by a Corning Gorilla glass and it features trimmed down side bezels which, also thanks to the 18:9 aspect ratio, should provide an immersive experience with more screen space while viewing optimised contents.
Camera, Hardware and Software
At the rear side of the Nokia 5.1 sits the 16-megapixel camera module, with a dual-LED flash just below it. Modes like HDR, Panorama and Geo-tagging are available and the camera can shoot full-HD videos of 1080p at 30 frames-per-second. An 8-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture is what you get for selfies and video calls upfront.
Performance-wise, the Nokia 5.1 doesn't disappoint. It is fitted with a Mediatek Helio P18 chipset with eight cores clocked at 2.0 GHz speed. There're two configurations of the Nokia 5.1 however; one is a 2 GB/16 GB variant while the other is a 3 GB/32 GB one, both of which the storage can be bolstered with up to a 256 GB micro SD-card. This setup should suffice if you run demanding task and juggle too may apps at once. Nokia 5.1 boots on stock Android 8.1 Oreo (under Android One) with an update to Android P to come soon.
Battery and Other Features
HMD opted for a 2,970 mAh battery unit on the Nokia 5.1. The non-removable battery doesn't really sound impressive on paper due to the display technology and size of this device and the power it is packing under the hood but we cannot entirely say that we're not optimistic here. There is also no fast charging technology but that shouldn't prove to be an issue due to the battery capacity.
With that said, the Nokia 5.1 shines in other aspects with numerous connectivity options, some of which includes a dual SIM (Hybrid) slot, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.2 LE, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, NFC, Headphone jack, Wi-Fi and more.
In Nigeria, the Nokia 5.1 will support LTE on all major networks including MTN, 9mobile, NTel, Globacom, Airtel, InterC, and Smile.
Price and Availability
The Nokia 5.1 is not yet available in Nigeria and Kenya but it's expected to hit major stores soon. The price of Nokia 5.1 in Nigeria should range between N79,000 to N85,000 ($218 to $225), while In Kenya, prices of the Nokia 5.1 should range between Ksh 19,999 to Ksh 25,999.
