The iPhone X and the Samsung Galaxy S9 were quite close, except for the inclusion of the notch on the former and the prominent top and bottom chin on the latter. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2/2s, One Plus 6, Essential Phone and the LG G7, among several others also impressed is this regard.
One smartphone company that was ready to go the extra mile in building a device with almost all screen on the front is Vivo. Vivo has finally delivered on it's quest for a smartphone with a true bezel-less display as it officially unveils the Vivo NEX; a revolutionary phone when it comes to the contemporary bezel-less design.
The Vivo NEX, formally called Vivo Apex, was first announced as a concept smartphone back at the 2018 Mobile World Congress, MWC, and it caught a lot of attention from the public owning to its insane screen-to-body ratio and the motorized front-facing camera that pops up at the top of the device. The Vivo NEX is finally here and it ticks all those boxes.
Starting off with the Vivo NEX "Ultra FullView" display, it is a huge 6.59-inch Super AMOLED panel with FHD+ resolution (1080+ pixels) and an alleged screen-to-body ratio of 91.24%, the highest in smartphone thus far. The Vivo NEX, as you can see above is a device with no display notch and merely a thin chin, as well as quite thin bezels on the sides. Also, sounds reverbates through the screen itself thanks to Vivo's so-called Screen SoundCasting Technology. This serves as the earpiece speaker for the device.
Despite the large screen, the Vivo NEX is about the same size as the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 as it measures of 162×77×7.98mm in overall dimension and weighs 199g.
The selfie camera on the Vivo NEX has an 8-megapixel f/2.0 lens that pops out from the top edge, as earlier mentioned, while at the back sits a 12-megapixel f/1.8 main camera coupled with a 5-megapixel f/2.4 depth-sensing module. The device also boasts of several camera AI features like AI Scene Recognition, AI HDR, AI Filters and AI Photo Composition.
The Vivo NEX is also up there with the best smartphones in the market in terms of performance. It powers on a Snapdragon 845 chip with 8GB of RAM and 256GB base storage space. (There’s also a cheaper model with a Snapdragon 710, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.) A masive 4,000 mAh battery keeps the light on while it also boasts of an in-display fingerprint sensor.
Out of the box, the Vivo NEX boots on Funtouch OS 4.0 on top of Android 8.1 Oreo. The Vivo NEX also has its own AI-powered smart assistant, called Jovi, which could be triggered with the help of a dedicated button on the side of the phone, and can be used to launch apps, recognise voice commands and more.
The Vivo NEX is only exclusive to the Chinese market at launch and the 8GB/256GB model will start at 4,998 yuan (about $780).
