A new analysis by IHS Markit has revealed that the iPhone 7 was the best selling smartphone globally in the first half of 2017.
The iPhone 7 was closely followed by its bigger sibling, the iPhone 7 Plus while the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime Plus, which is an entry level model with a 5-inch display occupied the number 3 spot.
Coming in at fourth place is the Apple iPhone 6s from 2015, while the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ wound up at the fifth and sixth spots respectively.
Although the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus placed first and second, the number of units shipped was lower compared to the shipping figures tallied by the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus during the first half last year.
While the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 were the most popular phones for the first half of 2015, 2016 and 2017 respectively, market share for each phone declined from 10% to 7% and then 5% this year.
The Samsung Galaxy S8+ could have done better in the rankings if it was released earlier, according to IHS. You may recall that both the Galaxy S8 and S8+ went on sale April this year which is a month later than the usual launch of the flagship models from Samsung. IHS Markit says that overall, the Galaxy S8/S8+ failed to surpass the first half total sales achieved last year by the Galaxy S7/S7 edge. (The Galaxy S7 edge ranked fourth for the same period last year)
The top ten smartphones for the first half of 2017 included five Samsung handsets, four Apple devices, and one phone made by Oppo.
