Xiaomi has officially announced its 2018 flagship smartphone, the Mi 8, and the most obvious change in hardware design is the inclusion of a notch above the display.

That fairly large notch above the Mi 8's display houses a 20-megapixel selfie camera while the display itself is an OLED panel from Samsung that measures 6.21-inches.

Under the hood of the Mi 8 is the high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor baked in a body made of four-way curved glass back panel and an aluminum frame. At the back is the iPhone X-type vertical dual-camera placement that both come in at 12-megapixels.

Xiaomi also says that this is the first phone ever to use dual-frequency GPS, which is supposed to give more accurate location data.

Xiaomi is also looking to make a statement in the smartphone market with the launch of  the Mi 8 Explorer Edition. The Explorer Edition has an in-display fingerprint sensor that, for the first time in a phone, uses pressure sensitivity.

Xiaomi also claims that the Explorer Edition is the first Android phone in the world to use 3D face recognition technology, like the iPhone X’s Face ID — and there’s an Animoji equivalent on board. The most important change on the Explorer Edition is the new transparent back panel that will simply leave you drooling.

For the cheaper and smaller SE model, Xiaomi has opted for a Snapdragon 710 processor making it the first device to pack Qualcomm's latest mid-range chip. The 710 is said to save 30 percent in power consumption over the previous-gen 660 while offering around 20 percent greater performance. The Mi 8 SE packs a 5.88 inch display which is also an OLED screen.

In terms of pricing, the Mi 8 will cost 2,699 yuan (~$421 or ~153,000 naira) in China, while the Explorer Edition will start from 3,699 yuan ($577 or ~210,000 naira), and the SE will be available for 1,799 yuan ($281 or ~102,000 naira). The Mi 8 will be available on China starting June 5th, with the SE following on the 8th and the Explorer Edition coming at a later date. No word on availability for India or any other markets just yet.
