A translucent version

Aside the stylish Flame Red and Ceramic Black "liquid surface" body (that debuted on the HTC U11) coming with the U12+, HTC has added a Translucent Blue version, which is absolutely stunning. The back of the device features a translucent material that lets you see the innards. This one definitely will be a true fans favourite.

Edge Sense 2

You might remember the Edge Sense or "squeeze" feature that first launched with the U11, before Google adopted it for their Pixel phones. This is a feature that lets you squeeze the pressure-sensitive sides of the device as a shortcut to trigger the Google Assistant. Fast forward to 2018, the feature has been upgraded on the HTC U12+ with more improvements, accuracy and functionality. Besides squeezing, you can now double tap the sides and the U12+ will respond accordingly.

It can also distinguish between a short and a long squeeze, and it now works for third-party apps as well. An example is the ability to zoom into maps with a light sqeeze, other than double tapping. You can also customize the squeeze action on the U12+ to your taste if you so wish.

Dual cameras with 2x optical zoom, portrait mode

HTC has added a host of new features to the new HTC U12+ camera. On the back is a dual camera setup; one is a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, with optical image stabilization while the secondary camera is a 16-megapixel telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. Among the new features is a portrait mode that blurs the background and leaves the subject nicely separated for that DSLR-like look. Focusing speeds have now also improved as the phone adopts a phase-detection plus laser auto-focus approach. Also added is 4K60 video recording, a smooth auto zoom function and Sonic Zoom that uses the four built-in microphones on the phone to focus on the part of the video that you have selected and zoomed in.

New and improved 2:1 LCD display

The HTC U12+ doesn't feature an AMOLED display, but the LCD on it is not the regular type you are used to. HTC U12+ comes with a Super LCD 6 generation display with a Quad HD+ resolution.
HTC has made sure to offer color modes for those who want more saturated colors like on the AMOLED panels and there is a DCI-P3 color mode on board as well. Screen burn-in issues reported on AMOLED displays will also not be an issue on this new HTC U12+ LCD panels in the long run.

Improved audio quality

You may remember the pioneering BoomSound audio technology HTC brought to the HTC M7 from back in the day. This tech has only gotten better ever since, and the new U12+ might be packing the best version yet. HTC added two separate speakers, one acting as a tweeter and a secondary one, delivering fuller sound. An headphone port, unsurprisingly is not present on the U12+, but you get a pair of USB-C USonic earbuds in the box that come with active noise cancellation.

The extras...

Under the hood is the new industry grade Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, paired with 6GB of RAM and 64 GB in-built storage (expansion up to 128 GB). The U12+ is IP68 rated for water resistance, while it gets a fast charging tech. In terms of securtiy, you get the new face unlock feature, coupled with a fingerprint scanner on the back.
