The BlackBerry KEY2, which is a successor to the KEYone, comes in a refined body, with an all new dual camera setup, better tactile keyboard and a battery that will supposedly last 2 days.

Design and Display

The BlackBerry KEY2 is a well built device. It sports a durable aluminum frame (7000 series) and a diamond-pattered plastic back which should hugely enhance the grip. The signature hardware QWERTY keyboard upfront is now 20% taller compared to the KEYones' making it more pronounced for a more tactile feel. The BlackBerry KEY2 is also sharper on all sides and edges, and it comes in Black and Silver.

The BlackBerry KEY2 is rocking a 4:5 inches IPS display that comes in at 1080 x 1620 pixel resolution. The pixels are densely packed at 434 ppi which, thanks to the display size, should make everything from text to photos appear sharp, crisp and colourful. The display also gets a Corning Gorilla glass 3 overlay for protection.

Camera, Hardware and Software

The BlackBerry KEY2 is the first BlackBerry branded smartphone to feature dual cameras. The primary 12-megapixel sensor is a regular RGB lens with an f/1.8 aperture while the other is a telephoto lens of the same megapixel with an f/2.6 aperture.

The KEY2's camera, aside the Google Lens support, shooting Portrait photos and 2K videos, has a new "Optical Superzoom" mode to enhance zoomed-in shots. What this does basically is to take a few photos for every time you press the shutter button, then stitch the images together to deliver a single noiseless image. An 8-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture is what you get for selfies and video calls upfront.

The BlackBerry KEY2 is not a slouch when it comes to performance. The device is powered by a mid-range octa-core Snapdragon 660 processor, that runs at 2.2 GHz and it backed by a generous 6 GB internal memory which should provide a fluid performance and room for more apps to run in the background . The KEY2 comes with either 64 GB or 128 GB storage and can be further expanded with a sizable 256 GB memory card. It boots on Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, with TCL promising at least one OS update which will probably be Android P.

Battery and Other Features

The BlackBerry KEY2 gets its juice from a 3,500 mAh non-removable battery which is quite impressive on paper. In fact, TCL Communications claims the device will last up to 2 days on a single charge, while it also added Quick Charge 3.0, via the USB-C port, that will get you from 0% - 50% in just under 40 mins.

The KEY2's physical keyboard, which can serve as a trackpad, houses the fingerprint scanner (embedded under the 'space' key) and a new Speed Key, which will give you quick access to a grand total of 52 customizable shortcuts. These could be anything from launching apps to triggering specific functions or calling your favorite contacts.

Also new is a Proactive Health Check feature will perform a deep scan of all your apps and detect any potential weaknesses, letting you pre-emptively take care of problem apps.

The BlackBerry KEY2 supports a dual SIM (Hybrid) slot, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, NFC, Headphone jack, Wi-Fi and more.

In Nigeria, the BlackBerry KEY2 will support LTE on all major networks including MTN, 9mobile, NTel, Globacom, Airtel, InterC, and Smile.

Price and Availability

The BlackBerry KEY2 is not yet available in Nigeria and Kenya but it's expected to hit major stores soon. The price of BlackBerry KEY2 in Nigeria should range between N233,000 to N245,000 ($649 to $699), while In Kenya, prices of the BlackBerry KEY2 should range between Ksh 30,999 to Ksh 45,999.
