Upnepa Nigeria is a newly launched mobile app that notifies you whenever electricity is restored or distorted at home, office, community or campus.
According to Innovation Village, the start-up was co-founded in January 2017 by two undergraduate students of The Federal University of Technology, Akure, Salaudeen Taslim and Salaudeen Abdurrahman, who currently are studying Remote Sensing & GIS and Computer Engineering respectively.
What inspired the initiative, Taslim said, is "the day to day problem faced by students whenever they want to make a decision which was based on whether or not there is electricity supply where they are heading to."
He added that “The problem of not been able to tell accurately whether or not there is power supply at a location without calling or texting any one brought about the motive to create this solution,”
Upnepa Nigeria, aside notifying you of the current state of power supply in a location, will inform you when electricy was last restored and for how long, and what source of power your friends are currently on.
The app works using a specially designed smart sensor which is planted across different areas or community (usually one per community). The smart sensors has the ability to detect electricity and send notifications to all subscribed users.
According to Taslim, over 10,000 students use the Upnepa application and it is available on 3 campuses at the moment while there are plans to expand the reach and also make users gain access to these information using USSD codes.
Upnepa in the nearest future hopes to expand to several communities and campuses across Nigeria to give Nigerians a smart way of making decisions that rely on power supply availability.
Lack of power supply in Nigeria has continually become a challenge Nigerians have to deal with in their day to day lives. Business owners have reported low productivity in recent years and students, especially undergraduates continue to experience hardship on campuses due to this.
But with Upnepa Nigeria, you as a student or a business owner will know beforehand where and when power is or will be at your disposal. Another use I see here is the ability to know wether or not a business should be cited in a particular location especially if you require a lot of electricity supply to run such business.
