Google, yesterday at its annual I/O keynote unveiled several new updates that will be arriving on Google's native apps.
I already talked about Android P and all its glory in this post so be sure to check that out. Google Apps, however are becoming more AI focused and much of what Google has added will center also on machine learning. Without #FodaAdu, let's get right into it.
Google Lens & Google Assistant
Google Lens, firstly has now been moved away from Google Photos to the native camera app, like on the LG G7 ThinQ. There will also be a real-time finder that will analyze what your camera sees even before you press click. If you point your camera at a poster of a musician, Lens can also start playing a music video. Google Lens can also now identify cloths and even suggest shopping links if it recognizes the brand. The app will be able to detect words from photos as well which can then be copied to your phone.A crossover between Google Lens and Maps has been implemented in which AR will be added to Street View and help you navigate in real time. Google was able to achieve all of these through machine learning and AI.
Google also announced a number of updates for Google Assistant. These includes 6 new voices, among which is John Legends', a feature to teach kids good manners like learning to say "Please" and "Thank you", the ability to continue conversations in a natural way, and Assistant being able to make phone calls on a user’s behalf. Cool.
Google Maps & Google News
Google Maps is to get a new AR feature which combine Google’s existing Street View and Maps data with a live feed from your phone’s camera to overlay walking directions on top of the real world and help you figure out which way you need to go. The new AR feature can also identify nearby places.A new "For You" feature will bring up recommendations specially tailored for you. This is achievable with a new “match number” system, which will generate a personal score on how much it thinks you’ll like the recommendation based on your past likes and reviews, as well as your saved food preferences.
For Google News, you now get a “For You” section that has a briefing of five top stories with a mix of global headlines, local news, and new developments on stories you’ve been following. You can switch over to Headlines to see top stories from around the world and can access other topics like sports, business, or technology.
There’s a new visual format called newscasts, which uses natural language understanding to give you a collection of articles, videos, and quotes on a single topic. This lets you get the basics by browsing different sources so you can decide if you want to look further into a story.
The "Full Coverage" feature lets you see how a story is being reported from a variety of places and in multiple formats, like social commentary, local news sources, and top publishers. Toward the bottom, there are frequently asked questions about the story, tweets from relevant sources, and fact-checks.
Several features and updates will be revealed by Google in coming days but for now, what do you guys think of this updates? Please leave a comment below.
