FaceID to come to all iPhones in 2018 - KGI

Apple faceID, face unlock, iPhone X

Apple decided to implement FaceID (an unlocking method that requires facial recognition) in their phones this year and the first Apple device to benefit from this top tier security system is the iPhone X (iPhone ten).

Apple got rid of the fingerprint scanner in the iPhone X in order for the phone to accommodate the all-screen, near bezel-less 5.8-inch AMOLED display. The new FaceID, however, did not feature on the other two iPhones that were released, which are the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, but it seems Apple will change that come next year.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities, Apple will drop the fingerprint scanner in all their phones by 2018, which means all the devices will launch with the new Kinect-like TrueDepth camera and FaceID. Ming-Chi Kuo had previously predicted that the company will not use a fingerprint scanner in one of its' iPhones this year which was correct.

Meanwhile, companies like Samsung, vivo, and LG will be looking to bring the in-display fingerprint unlock system to their smartphones next year and according to reports, Apple is still on the fence about that new technology in smartphones as the 3D touch currently featured in its displays makes for a thicker screen compared to most phones.

The new FaceID by Apple is not just for authentication, it also enables animojis and other future tech that are based on the system.
