If you have noticed, the emojis pre-installed on your devices are not the ones that appear when you launch the Whatsapp app and start to text people.
That's because Whatsapp tries to maintain a unified iOS emoji design across all platforms, whether it's iOS, Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile, Blackberry or desktop. This is so not to have confusing emojis across the said platforms.

But now, Whatsapp is breaking away from the iOS syndrome as it has created its own emoji designs. Whatsapp's Very Own emojis, introduced with the new 2.17.364 beta update, however doesn't resonate with most early users as some have said it looks like "iOS and Android Oreo emojis had a baby". OK, that's funny. 😃
The new emojis are the same with the ones before, but only redesigned, and they appear more cartoonish than the ones on the iOS, and a little like the ones on Oreo 8.0. Below are some before (left) and after (right) screenshots of the new Whatsapp emojis, courtesy of AndroidPolice.
The new emojis are not that ugly, but they also aren't that beautiful. I guess we'll learn to embrace them with time.

Yeah. There they're. |
What this means for Whatsapp.
Having its own emojis means it doesn't have to wait for Apple to introduce new emojis to iOS before updating. It also means that Whatsapp can add new emojis whenever it wants to.
